Foolproof DIY Carpet Cleaning Tips

Carpets add texture and a touch of grace to our homes, and regardless of how careful we are with them, at some point or another we might spill a drink, drop a pizza, or tread on them with dirty shoes.

It’s nothing to worry about because accidents happen!

Dealing with a carpet stain is very tricky because when one occurs, your first instinct is to grab the nearest piece of clothing to try to scrub the stain out – forcefully. This will end up being a mistake as jumping head-on into things without a solid plan is usually a recipe for disaster.

Sadly, most people are clueless about how to clean a carpet; they feel the remedy to every stain is incessant and forceful scrubbing. Even if it worked the first three times, in the long run, you might end up riddling your carpet with unpleasant lingering stains. So, before you bust out the good ol’ scrubbing sponge, here are five foolproof DIY carpet-cleaning methods to try.

A Hot Iron for Fatty/Greasy Stains
Greasy stains are an absolute pain to get rid of due to how messy they are and how easily they spread. Luckily, there’s a way to get rid of them:
  • Scrape off the affected area with a knife
  • Stack some paper towels on the stain
  • Grab an iron and turn it down to its lowest heat
  • Iron the paper towels to loosen up the grease
  • Gently blot out the remaining stain using a mixture of white vinegar, soap, and warm water.
  • Rinse

Try Some Shaving Cream
Yes, that’s right! Shaving cream is an effective carpet cleaning solution for getting rid of general carpet stains. All you need to do is:
  • Apply some shaving cream to the affected area
  • Let it sit for roughly 30 minutes
  • Blot away with a dry cloth
  • Spray the area with some water mixed with vinegar
  • Wipe again with a cloth

Hydrogen Peroxide Fixes Blood Stains
Accidents happen and sometimes we might end up bleeding. No need to panic as you can get rid of carpet bloodstains using hydrogen peroxide. It’s easy:
  • Losen up dried blood by using some water and mild detergent
  • Scrape off any excesses of blood from the carpet fibers
  • Apply hydrogen peroxide to the remaining stain (This will form a foamy reaction)
  • Use a towel to blot off the hydrogen peroxide, and then wipe the carpet dry.

Ice Cube for Dried Gum
If you ever notice a piece of dried gum stuck to your carpet, never yank at it. Instead, grab some cubes of ice, wrap it in a cloth, and place it on the gum. After a while, the gum gets stiff and becomes easy to scoop out with a spoon.
