The Best Carpet Cleaners for Your Home

1/31/2020

PictureThe Bissell Spotclean Pro
We know that every time your carpet needs a cleaning you aren’t going to hire a professional carpet cleaner like us. So, rather than be unrealistic, we thought we’d be helpful and give you our professional opinion on which are the best carpet cleaners out on the market right now. While they can’t measure up to a professional cleaning, read on to see our professional recommendations for the best carpet cleaners to leave your home feeling fresh and clean.

The Best Budget Carpet Cleaner
Coming in at $99.99 at the time of writing on Amazon, the Hoover Powerdash Pet is a great value considering the quality of the machine. It’s very light (only 13 lbs), has impressive suction and scrubbing power, and has an excellent price point. The only downsides are its lack of special features and that it has a relatively small 0.5 gallon tank.

The Best Pet Carpet Cleaner
We recommend the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Carpet Cleaner if you want a model that’s going to aggressively fight pet stains. It has a “CleanShot Pretreater” feature, which lets you press a button on the machine to spot clean an area of the rug as you shampoo it. It also has an upholstery attachment with wet and dry modes, so you can vacuum pet hair off of the couch and then shampoo it with the same attachment.

The Easiest to Use Carpet Cleaner
If you’re after ease of use, we recommend the Hoover Smartwash Automatic Carpet cleaner, as it makes vacuuming a breeze. The Smartwash dispenses the appropriate amount of water and cleaning solution as it scrubs and then automatically pulls it back to dry. The wonders of technology! It weighs in at 19.5 lbs, with a one gallon water tank, and an 8-ft. hose with attachments for spot cleaning.

The Best Top of The Line Carpet Cleaner
Get ready for this one: the Rolls Royce of carpet cleaners. The Bissell Big Green Professional Carpet Cleaner is a professional-grade machine with impressive stain-removing power. It retails around $400, but you can also rent one just for when you have a big clean. The machine cleans both forwards and backwards, which cuts down on cleaning time. It also features a separate 1.75 gallon tank for clean and dirty water to make cleanups easy, a nine foot hose with scrubber attachment, and an extra-large scrubbing brush. It weighs in at 40 lbs.

The Best Hand Held Carpet Cleaner
The Bissell Spotclean Pro is a great option if you are looking to just clean a few areas of your carpet, rather than the entire thing. It’s quite small, weighing in at 13 lbs with a  0.75 gallon water tank, which is large for a portable cleaner. Considering its size, consumer report it having impressive suction and stain removal power. The only downside is that they also report that the machine is prone to cracking over time.

As you can see from the list, Bissell is mentioned frequently. If any of these five aren’t your speed, we’d recommend checking out their product line for other options. And of course, if you want a professional team to take care of it, you can always give us a call.

Tips for Quick Clean Ups When You Don't Have Much Time

Guests coming over? Need to leave soon but do you have the urge to clean? If you didn’t have time to complete the deep clean that you aspired to, don’t worry. There’s no need to be embarrassed, just don some rubber gloves, prepare your elbow grease, and let’s get to work. Here are some tips to make the most of your short amount of time to clean up.

Prioritize
First thing’s first, what’s first? Jokes aside, the key to using time efficiently is putting the most important things at the top of the agenda. If you know that your guests will only be using a few rooms, clean those first. For example, the entryway, kitchen, and living room are the most frequently used rooms when hosting, while bedrooms and out of the way bathrooms can probably go towards the bottom of the list. If you just can’t make it to one room, close the door. Out of sight, out of mind!

Time Yourself
If you know you only have 15 minutes and three areas to clean, budget 5 minutes per area. Set a timer on your phone to hold yourself account. If you only have five minutes, start by doing the highest-priority items by scanning the room. When the timer goes off, switch to your new task, no exceptions! It’s also smart to build in some buffer time to account for unexpected surprises, so if you have 15 minutes total, maybe budget 4 minutes per room, with 3 minutes allocated for unexpected surprises.

Specific Room Advice:
Now that you’re organized and have a plan of attack, here are some things to look out for in each area of your house:

The Living Room
Grab any loose items such as remotes, newspapers, books, or toys, and throw them in drawers or otherwise get them out of sight. Whatever you can’t get out of sight, straight up (magazines, books), straighten up. Grab some paper towels or wet wipe and do a quick wipe-down of the major surfaces. Spend the last few moments making the room nice: fluffing pillows, adjusting blinds and lighting, etc. If you have the time, vacuum the major rugs and carpets in the room.

The Kitchen
Remove any dirty dishes from the sink and put them in the dishwasher (you might have to remove dishes from the dishwasher to do this). Put any stray food in the refrigerator or in the trash, and any stray items can be shoved in a drawer to be dealt with later. Quickly wipe down the appliances.

Bedrooms
The first step to a clean bedroom is a neat bed. Once you’ve made your bed, put any dirty laundry in your laundry basket or in a drawer (making sure not to mix it with your clean clothes). Put any nick-nacks on dressers or tables into drawers or your closet. When you’re short on time, the important thing is that things are out of sight at first glance, you can go back later to figure out where everything should go in the long-term.

Bathroom
Like the other rooms, make sure that all stray items are out of sight. Make sure there is plenty of toilet paper, and wipe down the toilet if it needs a wipe. Wipe down the sink and mirror, and make sure to empty the trashcan before your guests arrive.

Follow these tips and you’ll definitely make the most of the short amount of time you have. Now get crackin’!

Spring Cleaning Tips

1/14/2020

We know that we’re still in the dead of winter (which is just SO tough for us Californians), but just as they are starting to lay out Valentine’s day candies in the drug stores, pretty soon you’re doing to start thinking of spring cleaning. It might be the pollen in the air, the sunny late afternoons, or the warmer weather, but every spring I get the urge to clean out my home. After doing it for so many years, I thought I’d share some tips and tricks to make your home feel like new for the summer months ahead.

  1. Always Work Top To Bottom
If you are dusting, vacuuming,  or otherwise cleaning around your house, it’s smart to start from high up and work your way down, as this will force dust and debris downward. This way you won’t have to redo all your cleaning as you might if you worked from bottom to top. So if you have a vacuum with an extendable hose, use it to get to those hard to reach high places, then dust your furniture, then clean the floors. You’ll save time!

  1. Give Your Kitchens and Bathrooms Some Love
Your kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most used areas of the house, so definitely give them some attention. For kitchens, this is a perfect opportunity to clean some areas that hardly get any attention. Wipe down the inside of your cabinets, go through the pantry and refrigerator and throw out old items, and use gentle cleaners on your stainless steel appliances. For the bathrooms, change your shower curtain and check your medicine cabinets and drawers for any expired items. This is also a great opportunity to whip out the old grout cleaner and wipe down the cracks between your tiles.

  1. Get a New Bathroom Fan
If you haven’t done so in a while, consider replacing your bathroom fan with a new one. They become less effective with time, and are great at removing moisture from your bathroom and removing odors. Certain new models even come with lights and automatic settings built in.

  1. Change Your Air Filter
Many people neglect to replace their furnace and HVAC filter, but doing so would benefit them greatly during this high-pollen season. Pick one with a high MERV rating that will keep you healthier and your air cleaner. If anyone in your house suffers from allergies, air purifiers are very effective at removing allergens and other debris from the air.

  1. Upgrade to a HEPA Vacuum
If you don’t have one already, a HEPA vacuum is especially effective at cleaning your carpets and other surfaces. HEPA vacuums capture microscopic particles such as pet dander, pollen, and other debris that affects your health. It’s hands down one of the best spring cleaning devices you can add to your repertoire. If you don’t have one, you can still up your vacuuming game by using the attachments such as brushes and hoses to get to hard to reach places. These attachments allow you to clean furniture, tight spaces, pillows, and other surfaces that don’t get cleaned very often.
